Strengthen young people to solve their conflicts without violence. Peer mediation as an example of good practice.

Seminar

15-18 November 2021 | Luxembourg, Luxembourg

The seminar gives professionals the opportunity to exchange best practices to empower and equip young people with the required knowledge to tackle violence amongst peers.

Help professionals to put effective projects in place

The two main topics we want to tackle are on the one hand to find projects and methods, which might help to fight violence between young people by empowering them to tackle these issues by themselves and in the other hand, to support the professionals in their work of supporting these young people.

Every year, thousands of young people die due to violence and many more suffer physical, psychological or social consequences of violence in their daily lives. Those consequences can have a dramatic impact on their psychological development. Children and adolescents often learn from adults that the use of force and violence is legitimate to achieve their own benefit. The lack of skills to handle conflicts peacefully and constructively can be a gateway to violence for young people.

Furthermore, youth workers, teachers and other professionals, who support these young people, do not always have the methods that could help youngsters in these situations.

Over the past 20 years, in Luxembourg, the project “Peer Mediation” has been the largest national project providing young people with the necessary skills, to handle conflicts without using violence. In 2021, a new project “S-Team: get involved!” will take over.

This new projects wants to go further by encouraging young people to realize activities to sensitize their peers on the effects of violence and so act, before a possible conflict or violence has even a chance to occur. Projects like “Peer Mediation” or “S-Team: get involved!”, which are mainly present in schools, are only two approaches among many which address this critical subject.

Therefore, we would like to organize a seminar to bring together participants (from formal and non-formal education) to have an exchange of different projects and methods with different focuses such as moral courage, strengthening social skills, prevention of violence, etc., that have been proven to be effective. We will:

  • Make an inventory of the different projects throughout Europe
  • Present and exchange on good practices/projects
  • Exchange on how professionals can be supported to help young people in their struggles against violence
